Russians on the Sonoma Coast

For history buffs and the curious, Fort Ross State Historic Park will be presenting East Meets West – Spring Meets Summer on Saturday May 21st from 10:00am to 4:30pm.

The Sonoma Coast has a special relationship with Russia by way of Fort Ross.  In 1812 Russian and Alaskan explorers and traders established Fort Ross as Russia’s southernmost outpost and very nearly changed the course of history for the state of California.

This Saturday’s event will feature a special presentation for the current Russian Consular General of the Russian Embassy. Costumed volunteers will perform traditional Russian songs and dances. Visitors will also have the opportunity to talk to park interpreters and scholars about the history of Fort Ross and relations between Russia and the North Pacific both past and present.

Fort Ross State Historic Park is located just five miles south of the Timber Cove Inn and offers visitors a unique opportunity to learn history while exploring the beautiful Sonoma Coast during their weekend getaway.
