Escape to Scenic Sonoma County

Ansel Adams Art Travel at the Timber Cove Inn

Timber Coast Inn is located amid the sweeping seaside scenery of Sonoma County California, which was frequently featured in the breathtaking photography of Ansel Adams. Many of Adams’ world-renowned photographs depict the natural beauty present around our oceanfront hotel.

Adams, who was noted for his stunning photos of the American West, captured images of Sonoma County for both commercial and artistic purposes. Of the 50-plus Ansel Adams Sonoma County photos published, only a few ever achieved wide public viewing, most of which are not available today. One of the most famous Ansel Adams California photos is a shot of the rugged Sonoma County coast titled “Storm Surf (Timber Cove),” which features a massive wave crashing across a bed of dark rocks. It was the turbulence of the California coast that drew Adams to Sonoma from his prior home in placid Hawaii.

Other celebrated Ansel Adams California photos include “Clearing Storm, Sonoma County” and “Oak Tree, Rain,” images made in the 1950s and 1960s. Adams considered these photos, which were part of an experimental large-scale project, his best work.

Though Adams died in 1984 at the age of 82, his timeless photographs have lived on, inspiring art travel to Sonoma County and surrounding areas. We are proud to celebrate Ansel Adams and other exceptional artists, and we invite you to visit Timber Cove Inn and draw inspiration from our scenic surroundings.
