Details of the Wineries Participating in our Sonoma Coast Wine Maker Dinners

Featured Wineries for Upcoming Wine Maker's Dinners:

February 26, 2010: William Selyem Winery

Williams Selyem Winery began as a simple dream of two friends, Ed Selyem and Burt Williams, who pursued weekend winemaking as a hobby in 1979 in a garage in Forestville, California, and made their first commercial vintage in 1981. In less than two decades, Burt and Ed created a cult-status winery of international acclaim. Together they set a new standard for Pinot Noir winemaking in the United States, aligning Sonoma County's Russian River Valley in the firmament of the best winegrowing regions of the world. Today John and Kathe Dyson, who purchased the winery from Burt and Ed in 1998, carry on the passion for Pinot Noir winemaking without compromise.

March 19, 2010: Failla

While the history of Failla (pronounced FAY-la) is short it is not without its complexities. Founded as Failla Jordan in 1998, it took its name from the husband-and-wife team of winemaker Ehren Jordan and fellow debtor Anne-Marie Failla. That year we planted our Estate vineyard on the Sonoma Coast and began buying fruit for our first releases, the very Rhône-style ‘98 Alban Vineyard Viognier and ‘98 Que Syrah Syrah.

April 16, 2010: Paul Mathew Vineyards

Mat Gustaffson’s (winemaker) passion for wine began while working at his uncle's store in his home state of Michigan. By the young age of 18, Mat earned his hotel/restaurant degree and began managing restaurants. He then moved to Colorado and received a degree in Political Science from University of Colorado, Boulder. He worked his way through college holding the position of Sommelier at the Flagstaff House Restaurant in Boulder. While the Flagstaff House continued to earn the Grand Award from the Wine Spectator since 1983 and having over 2000 wines on the list, Mat was able to taste some of the finest wines in the world! This is where he became hooked on Domain Leflaive White Burgundy, which would one day become his model for making Chardonnay.

May 28, 2010: Hirsch Winery and Vineyards

Perched on a ridge overlooking the Pacific at FortRoss, Sonoma County, Hirsch Vineyards is the birth ground of great pinot noir on the Sonoma coast. The pinot noir and chardonnay wines from Hirsch Winery allow the passionate drinker to experience the clash of opposites meeting in Nature and Life: the edge of the continent washed by the sea; the eternal grinding of the North American and Pacific plates along the San Andreas Fault; the wet winters and dry summers of the ocean and desert climates.

June 18, 2010: Hanzell Vineyards

In 1948, Ambassador James D. Zellerbach acquired 200 acres in the Mayacamas Mountains one mile north of the Sonoma plaza. The Ambassador's ambition was to create a small vineyard and winery dedicated to the best traditions of Grand Cru Burgundy: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of extraordinary quality and great longevity. The Zellerbachs planted 6 acres in 1953 (now the oldest Pinot Noir vineyard in America) and created the first vintage in 1957. They named their winery Hanzell, a contraction of Mrs. Hana Zellerbach's name, and embarked on what would become recognized as one of California's most enduring and historically important wine estates.

September 17, 2010: Fort Ross Vineyard & Winery

Nestled on a sunny coastal ridge, overlooking the Pacific Ocean a mile below, this “True Sonoma Coast” vineyard is one of the closest to the ocean in all of California. See the breaking surf and the misty silhouettes of Bodega Head from the vineyard, and Pt. Reyes far below. The vineyard’s high elevation above the coastal fog and its proximity to the ocean provide a gentle, sunny and temperate climate that has proved to be very favorable for the slow and even ripening of our Burgundian varietals.
